Removing Geotags From Your Online Photos, How To Accept Credit Cards And Craft Fairs And Bead Shows, Thoughts On Earrings

I was talking with someone the other day and I recall that I spent a significant amount of time focusing on her earrings. They weren’t anything that would normally captivate me (they were simple gold hoops), leading me to believe my mind subconsciously did this because:
A) Being a jewelry person, I’m fascinated with looking at people’s jewelry
B) Earrings are nearly at eye level so it’s much easier to be in a conversation with someone and spend a good amount of time checking out their earrings without them being that aware that you’re doing it (staring at someone’s necklace during a conversation is VERY noticeable).

Knowing this, I’m simply going to have to force myself to start wearing earrings. :-)

NYRs

So how are we all doing with our New Year’s resolutions? Mine were few, but significant. I’m not doing GREAT, but it’s more like a plodding along type thing… and so I am… plodding along. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Oh, remember that youtube video I posted the other night (the animated lecture)? I’m still struck (but totally not surprised) by the one part that was talking about how busy people are and how they never had time for family/friends/relaxation/etc and if they were given an eighth day in the week to do whatever they wanted… how many said they’d spend it doing more of the things that still aren’t family/friends/relaxation/etc. I can’t claim to be any different. But I can decide to be different from this point forward.

CREDIT CARDS AND CRAFT FAIRS

For those of you who have wanted to accept credit cards at bead/jewelry shows (and prefer to swipe rather than data enter someone’s info into your laptop), you may want to check into this option:

SQUARE cell phone credit card reader

That’s an article/review about the product/service. Here’s the actual website.

Doesn’t work on all cell phones, but here’s the list of phones it currently works with:
Apple iOS
• iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4
• iPod touch (2nd generation or later)
• iPad
Google Android
• Motorola Droid, Droid X
• HTC Nexus One, Droid Incredible, Evo, Desire, Hero (With Android 2.X)
• Samsung Galaxy S Series, Intercept
• LG Ally

Now, speaking of cell-phones (and posting pictures you’ve taken with yours)…

REMOVING GEOTAGS FROM YOUR ONLINE PHOTOS

“The storage of location based data, in the form of Latitude and Longitude inside of images is called Geotagging; essentially tagging your photograph with the geographic location… Most people don't realize that the action of automatic geotagging takes place on their smart phones… As a result, individuals often share too much information about their location, right down to the exact Latitude and Longitude when snapping photos with their smartpphone and posting them online…”

Can you say, “I don’t want any creepy stalkers knowing where I live?”

Here’s an article explaining what it is and how freaky it can be.

And an article explaining how to remove geotag ability from your phone.

Here’s an article about removing geotags specifically from your Picasa photos.

  1. Hi Laura!
It's been quite awhile since either one of us have talked with you. We've both been quite busy but I saw your post on my RSS feed and thought that other readers might like to know this tid-bit of information about the Square card reader.

If you are just now deciding to get a phone and use the Square card reader it is supper easy to get. After researching it and using the app on someone's iPhone I have been told there is a difference between that and the iPad app. On the iPhone you enter in the total value of the transaction after you have self calculated all the items and sales tax then enter that amount and swipe the card. With the iPad app. I understand that you can enter in separate items, say earrings set, necklace & bracelet + tax on separate lines and then you will get the total and have a digital record of exactly what was in the transaction. Just so people are aware of the difference - it's enough to make us save for the iPad instead of getting the iPhone right now. Plus you do not have to pay every month for the internet service there is no contract for it with ATT for the iPad.

Just thought some people might like to know!

  2. Picasa does not let to remove geotags from batches of files. So, I prefer to use EXIFCleaner for that purpose. It deals not only with EXIF metadata, but also with IPTC, Adobe XMP, and with other various types of hidden info.
